Maintaining Sound Quality - Experiences and Constraints of Perceptual Measurements in Today´s and Future Networks"

98th AES Convention, Paris, 1995, Preprint #3946

The extensive use of perceptual codecs will be characteristic for future audio networks. Depending on the systems and bitrates employed, the final sound quality may decrease seriously with multiple generations. Perceptual measurement techniques, like NMR, have proven to be a valuable tool in assessing bit-rate reduced signals. This paper will investigate how perceptual measurement systems are suitable to aid the network design. Results will be reported and some constraints in the use of perceptual measurements will be discussed.
