A perceptual model applied to audio bit-rate reduction

J. Audio Eng. Soc., Vol. 43, pp. 233-240, 1995

A model of the human ear has been developed for use in perceptual coding of audio signals. As it predicts well-known experimental results, it is further used as an artificial ear in various experiments on masking phenomena. Applications of this model to objective perceptual measurement techniques and to improve the efficiency of a MUSICAM codec (ISO MPEG1 audio) are discussed.
