Evaluating the Perceived Audio Quality (PEAQ) of Internet Audio Codecs

109th AES Convention, Los Angeles, 2000

Recently, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) investigated into the sound quality of low bit-rate audio codecs as commonly used for internet audio transmissions. In order to overcome the shortcomings of subjective test procedures such as ITU-R BS.1116 with respect to the assessment of intermediate audio quality, a new test method called 'MUSHRA' was devised. In 1998 the ITU-R released PEAQ, the new standard method for the objective evaluation of compressed audio quality. This paper investigates into the applicability of PEAQ to intermediate audio quality testing and reports results and guidelines for the objective quality assessment of intermediate audio quality.
